On February 26, the Indiana Department of Education hosted the Indiana Awards for Excellence Event in Indianapolis. The Indiana Awards for Excellence (AFE) program highlights the outstanding achievement of Career and Technical Education (CTE) students, partners, programs and career advisement programs around the state that exemplify the ideal qualities of Career and Technical Education.

The Welding Technology program at Pike Central High School was awarded the Indiana Awards for Excellence award for CTE Secondary program of the year. Kevin Carter, Welding instructor at Pike Central, received the award on behalf of the program.

The Pike Central program uses the AWS Sense program to prepare students for post-secondary success. The program has 100% job placement for students want to continue to work in the welding industry. The instructor work with local employers to ensure each student has opportunity for job placement upon graduation.

The program is one of the premier secondary Welding programs in the state. The program has won the team welding tournament 18 times in the past 32 years. The program has also had 10 students in the Top 5 at the Skills USA National Competition. Two Pike Central students have won the Skills USA National Championship.

Kevin Carter, Pike Central welding instructor, and the Pike Central Welding program are very deserving of the Awards for Excellence award. This program is a lighthouse among all Patoka Valley CTE Cooperative programs.
